Orford Ness is one of Europe’s largest vegetated shingle spits. It is open to the public but due to the sensitive nature of the site and the risk of unexploded ordnance the number of visitors each year is limited and those who do visit must stick to marked routes. The following links to nature designations recognise its importance

As  part of the Natura 2000 network of designated sites which are of national and European importance for their habitats and species, three major projects have been undertaken over the last twenty years, funded by the European Union's LIFE Nature programme.
